The US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that his administration is seriously considering ending the right of citizenship for US born children of noncitizens and people who entered the United States illegally.
Trump made the statement while speaking to reporters outside the White House when he announced a proposal to detain undocumented families.
CNN reports that the new rule allows officials to detain migrant families indefinitely while judges consider whether to grant them asylum in the United States, to replace the agreement that set a 20-day limit for holding children.
“We are looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship, where you have a baby on our land, you walk over the border, have a baby – congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen. … It is frankly ridiculous,” he added.
According to CNN, the 14th Amendment of the Constitution guarantees birthright citizenship and states.
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” it stated.
Recall that in July, Trump administration unveiled a rule to bar almost all immigrants from applying for asylum at the southern border, and on August 12 it also announced regulation allowing visas and permanent residency only for those who make enough money
