President Buhari Signs African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement


President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday signed the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) at the First Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities in Niamey, Niger Republic.

The move was disclosed by his personal assistant (photography), Sunday Aghaeze on social media with photos of Buhari signing the agreement.

Free trade agreements are designed to cut trade tariffs between member countries that can be placed on goods coming into a country for a range of reasons, sometimes to try and protect a home-made product.

Nigeria now the 53rd county in Africa to sign the AfCFTA agreement after a presidential panel set up to look into the AfCFTA advised that the country would benefit economically from the envisaged trade relations with other African countries.
